Musk was born on June 28, 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa. He showed an early interest in computers and technology, and taught himself computer programming at the age of 12. He later attended the University of Pretoria for a brief period before moving to Canada at the age of 17 to attend Queen's University. He transferred to the University of Pennsylvania two years later, where he received dual bachelor's degrees in economics and physics.

After college, Musk moved to Silicon Valley and began working in the tech industry. He co-founded web software company Zip2, which was sold to Compaq for almost $300 million in 1999. He then founded X.com, an online payment company, which later became PayPal and was sold to eBay for $1.5 billion in 2002.

With the wealth he had accumulated from the sale of Zip2 and PayPal, Musk turned his attention to space travel and founded SpaceX in 2002 with the goal of reducing the cost of space launches and eventually colonizing Mars. In 2008, SpaceX became the first privately-funded company to launch a spacecraft into orbit and return it safely to Earth. Since then, SpaceX has continued to develop and launch advanced rockets and spacecraft, and has also begun developing reusable spacecraft and rocket technology.

In addition to SpaceX, Musk is also the CEO of Tesla, Inc., an American multinational corporation that specializes in electric vehicles, energy storage and solar panel manufacturing based on sustainable energy. He is also the founder of The Boring Company, which aims to construct underground transportation systems.

Musk has a number of other ventures and investments as well, including Neuralink, OpenAI, and the BFR (Big Falcon Rocket) project. Throughout his career, Musk has been known for his ambitious goals and willingness to take on difficult challenges in order to drive innovation and progress in the fields of technology and space exploration.
